A city symphony, on Kolkata. The film chronicles a day in the city from midnight for the next 24 hours. Shot over two years, with funding from Jadavpur Univeristy, it captures Kolkata as the city goes through a political upheaval. Time is compressed into 24 hours.The film focuses on the politics religion, labour and the marginalized, in the state of West Bengal, which is still ruled by the Communist Party of India.

In the 90’s with new technologies like internet and mobile phones converging with video, pornography has become a global industry. The USA is the largest producer and exporter of pornographic material.

In India, painting and sculpture have for long depicted sex. Since the 1950’s a part pf the film industry caters to pornographic material, making “A” rated films. Recently with the availability of cheap video cameras and mobile phones, a section of the people in India have started to record and make their own amateur videos.

This film is about one of the earliest such amateur videos. A couple shot themselves having sex on a video camera. The video known variously as “Mysore Mallige”, “Coorgy Sweety”, “Love in Karnataka” somehow got distributed and became an underground cult phenomenon, spawning an urban legend…

Three young women, in their late twenties, meet up in a cafe somewhere in the city. They were close friends in college, but haven’t met for the last five years. After some initial hesitation, they find two things they still have in common. They all need money, and they have had problems with men. A heated discussion leads them into a decision. They will behave like men that night. Like a game, they will do as many men that night. And charge for it. They will meet in the morning in the same cafe, and whoever has the most amount of money, will get all the money.

The film follows the three women, as they flow through the night, fighting for their identities. Their stories run parallel to each other, moving through grief, despair and confusion to breakdowns, introspection and violence.
